In 2010 Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the last day before Lent. Lent is a time when traditionally people gave up butter, fat and eggs, so Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge in all these luxurious ingredients so people made pancakes. Today some people give up a luxury food like chocolate or sweets for lent. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday which is the start of Lent, a Christian festival leading up to Easter Sunday. Pancake races are held all over England. The object of the race is to get to the finishing line first whilst flipping a pancake in a frying pan.
Pancake Day (o el día de las tortitas) es el día anterior al comienzo de la Cuaresma. Tradicionalmente, durante la Cuaresma, no se comía mantequilla, grasa ni huevos, por tanto el día anterior era última oportunidad para darse el gusto con todos esos ingredientes, y por eso hacían tortitas (los ingredientes de las tortitas son huevo, mantequilla, leche, harina, azúcar) Hoy en día la gente lo que hace en Cuaresma es dejar de comer alimentos de lujo como el chocolate o las chucherías. Shrove Tuesday es el día antes del miércoles de ceniza, con el que empieza la Cuaresma, una fiesta cristiana que culmina en la Pascua. En Inglaterra se hacen carreras de tortitas. El objetivo de esta carrera es llegar a la línea de meta mientras dan vueltas a las tortitas en una sartén.
